Happy Saturday!
Although we intended to get up at 7:00 a.m. to make a train to Robertsbridge, we decided that it was Saturday, and we are on vacation…so we shut off the alarm and crawled back in bed until noon. Bodium Castle will have to wait ‘til Monday. J
We took the tube to the British Museum to see the Egyptian exhibits, despite Max’s aversion to “culture,” ha. The museum has an extensive collection of mummies, coffins and other tomb artifacts. Most of the mummies were still intact and encased in their burial wrappings – the archaeologists have posted CAT scan images on the display cases to show the skeletal remains and amulets inside. Max thought the animal mummies were pretty cool – there were mummified cats, falcons, fish, bulls and even an alligator! The hieroglyphics and drawings on the coffins and stone texts were unbelievably detailed and brightly-colored, even thousands of years later.
One of the most unique displays at the British Museum is Lindow Man, the body of an adult male buried in a peat bog for almost 2,000 years. The natural mummification process has preserved the man’s skin, hair, organs and clothing. Unfortunately, as luck would have it, the exhibit has been loaned out to another museum…as of TODAY. Go figure!
We finally hopped on a red double-decker bus to fulfill Max’s biggest request, and took the route all the way west to where it terminates at Notting Hill Gate, Hyde Park. The three of us made our way back to the hotel, alternating taking the tube and walking in the rain. The streets and underground were very busy today. We stopped for ice cream cones (also Max’s request) on the way back too.
Room service for dinner this evening…despite our late start, we are feeling rather lazy. J Tomorrow’s outing is going to be the Natural History Museum – the gallery of dinosaurs has both fossilized skeletons and life-size animatronic replicas.
Have a good night!
